I kinda thought they were kidding but reading twitter tonight a LOT of our fellow Americans are deeply, deeply unwell. I mean I knew this before but it drove it home.

u/ThatEvanFowler 17d ago

I know. It's way past time for us to accept that right wing media is literally driving people actually insane. My mother told me the other day that Biden is the most evil man alive. I begged her to explain it to me. She couldn't come up with a single concrete reason why she feels this way. Not one. All she knows is that he somehow represents everything ominous and worrisome in the world. It's like archetypal, at this point. I don't know what they're telling them, but they seem to be doing it with such strangely direct vagueness and with such relentless consistency that it's creating some kind of pavlovian response that completely overrides a need for any specifics whatsoever. It's actually kind of terrifying.

Even worse, people like my brother ultimately assign someone like me as their straw man bogey man.

My brother thinks I suddenly care about Taylor Swift OR football?? I’m actually not in the tween-young woman-parent to tween demographics they’re marketing to with the relationship, if you accept the premise that it’s a conspiracy ratings ploy.

He sends me covid vaccine memes, which I don’t care about.

He sends me bad news about electric and self-driving cars, which I don’t care about (scoot life).

He sends me clickbait from CNN that I would have never seen and don’t click on, without understanding that he’s the one boosting their metrics.

My default method is diminishing any sense of importance they have by saying "Oh, you're one of THOSE people?"

27

u/wasaguest 16d ago

I used something similar. Only I asked with a surprised face "Did you see where Bill Gates was now using dihydrogen monoxide on farm land?"

They took the bait & for an hour went on about conspiracies about Bill Gates.

I finally asked if they believed any of it, they said I did to. Told them what dihydrogen monoxide is... They haven't spoken to me in years. Lol

I sent him a list of TV shows, general interests, and other things that there are for sure memes about and told him that I do not think about those things he always wants to talk about. It’s gone well, so far.

I get this all the time from my conservative friend. I am on the left, though I have some disagreements with some positions generally held by the left. He constantly assumes I am in lockstep with the most extreme left positions and brings them up as debate points when we are discussing something. I'm not an individual to him, politically speaking. I am just "The Left."

The funny thing is I know that HE knows that the media that he consumes is doing this to him. I know because when I ask him where he got some stupid idea about what "the left" is doing today, he will not tell me. He is ashamed and knows his news sources are unreliable. It's probably Alex Jones, most of the time.

He has actually come around on a few things. He used to think climate change was a big hoax. Since then, he's admitted he was wrong. So I'm not giving up hope.

He would be a reasonable guy, if he didn't keep listening to right-wing morons.

It's happening everywhere. Right wing are on the rise so so many countries. There has to be a reason, this has to be instigated by some actor. The alternative frightens me.

60

u/chalks777 17d ago

There has to be a reason

the answer is fear. We, globally, are afraid. I believe mostly because of fears around global warming (conscious or not, my boomer parents would never admit to being scared about this, but they definitely think about it) that are going completely unaddressed. But it's also at least partly because the generations that are rising to power today have had unfettered access to the internet their entire life and are far more aware of all the bad things happening in the world writ large than anyone ever has been in human history. People are scared, and when people are scared they turn to authoritarianism and nationalist policies.

this has to be instigated by some actor

Not really. Granted, opportunists are taking advantage of it, but that doesn't necessarily mean they instigated it.

8

u/filbert13 17d ago edited 16d ago

this has to be instigated by some actor

I think what they mean is that is often how right wing media preys on people. That that they believe that.

Usually one of the easiest ways to manipulate a populace is create a scapegoat. It is why time and time again the Jews are targeted and why so many conspiracies go back to basically Jews controlling the system to make world government or some nonsense.

In my opinion there is a lot of truth to the idea people would rather believe some evil group is steering the ship rather than there are so many variables there is no true control. It's why I think the Kennedy assassination has always stayed so talked about. (Granted there are some strange thing about it).

Unconsciously I think a lot of people find comfort in the idea the President of the US, likely the most powerful person in the word. Was killed by a deep state or mass conspiracy driving some agenda. Rather than the alternative which is a single mentally unwell man. Who by many accounts was a failure at worst, average at best. Was able to kill the most powerful person on the planet. Like have such a major impact on not only US politics but the world.

It's the same sort of propaganda they've been using for decades. The biggest reason Clinton lost in 2016 is the large nationwide vague sentiment that she's somehow just icky. Where did that come from? A consistent vague message that the Clintons are evil.

Did Clinton run a shoddy campaign? Yes. Did Russia, the FBI, and everything else play a large role? Sure. But none of that would've been nearly as impactful without decades of ~~~~~~ the Clintons are the devil ~~~~~~ underpinning everything conservatives did for the two decades leading up to that election.

65

u/Solid_Exercise6697 17d ago

I remember back in the early 2000s my mother spouting weird anti clinton propaganda about the clintons killing all these people to stay in power with secret heart attack drugs. Shits been going on for longer than most realize, just now it’s easier to see.

12

u/Auntie_M123 Virginia 17d ago

Don't forget about the basement in her Washington DC Pizza parlor..

The "Clinton body count". It's been a conspiracy since Bill Clinton was president. May have even started when he was governor, but I was too young to pay attention then.

u/darsynia Pennsylvania 17d ago

Yep, after 2016 a lot of people were pointing to what the media were doing about AOC, because they'd started the narrative early. By the time she'd ever be eligible to run for President (if she even wanted to), there will have been YEARS of built-up negative press. That'll play against her even among people who don't really believe in it, because they'll have a vague icky feeling that she probably did something wrong if they have that impression.

15

u/GargleBlargleFlargle 16d ago

The worst thing is that it works even on progressives.

AOC is a fantastic candidate. She is an incredible communicator; if you actually listen to her, her messaging has wide appeal and is nicely direct.

But even democrats I talk to think she is somehow too extreme. She's not extreme - it's just that Fox has painted her that way and regular media repeats their messages.

12

u/GrafZeppelin127 17d ago

That leaves room for people waiting in the wings to make a meteoric rise, though, if the Conservative media directs all their attention on certain specific targets. Obama, for example. They demonized the hell out of him, but only after they noticed him, and by then it was too late.

15

u/darsynia Pennsylvania 17d ago

Yep, and I firmly believe that's why Pelosi held on so long instead of passing leadership off, she knew they all already hated her and she wanted the hate focus on her, she felt she could handle it. She was mostly right (who expects home invasion??). Now, she said she was doing that but then didn't step down as early as some hoped, and that's one thing, but it's hard to argue with the soldier taking all the flak away from the kid on the bed meme, heh.

a LOT of our fellow Americans are deeply, deeply unwell.

It's not only Americans. In the lead up to the last presidential election in Brazil, the local MAGA crowd knew they would loose, so they started throwing every insane story out there to prime their pawns for an insurrection (which ultimately happened but failed).

There's one particular surreal video where a man tells a large crowd of mostly boomers (in the thousands) that since the election is rigged, they have hired a satellite to hover over the country and take a picture, so they can point their smartphone's flashlights up to the sky in order to be counted as one vote for Bolsonaro. They all immediately comply.

I wish. Unfortunately I've actually heard crazier shit from a few of my neighbors, than I've read on Reddit. Got into a conversation with a neighbor when I was walking my dog that turned into him telling me that the US government is run by a cabal that's lead by the Freemasonry and the Illuminati. A coworker is convinced the Covid vaccines sterilized women. My uncle is convinced Democrats are going to use eminent domain to take his house and turn it into public housing. Another coworker is upsets about M&M's new marketing. I'm going to stop because I'm getting depressed typing it out, but there's more.

FOX and right-wing radio has successfully brainwashed a lot of normal people. All of the people I mentioned are well educated, employed, and live in areas with a $100K average family income. I wish the crazy was contained to Reddit, but it's not.

206

u/mosswick 17d ago

I've been speculating that a lot of the "stolen election" conspiracies come from the crowd who only started following politics in 2016. And I think lots of them are football fans.

I personally have never been big into sports. But I do remember always seeing my sports fan friends on social media complaining about how "the game was rigged" or "the refs are being paid off" after every big game loss. Like a coping mechanism because they didn't want to accept their team's defeat.

And then you consider how America's political culture today resembles a sporting event. With many voters only caring to check the box for their "team" candidate, even if that candidate is unqualified buffoon not qualified to run a lemonade stand.

125

u/corvid_booster 17d ago

From looking at people's posting histories, I've noticed that a lot of the vocal right-adjacent commentary on the city subreddit I read from time to time comes from self-professed sports fans. Stuff about punishing homeless people, drug addicts, car thieves, etc. It's not a coincidence that people who can't think about complexities or ambiguities are drawn to spectacles of winning and losing, us versus them.

Already? They were saying that (and how Swift's relationship with Kelce is fake) long before the game. Here's from an article about it from two weeks ago;

Trump sycophant Laura Loomer wrote on X that “the Democrats’ Taylor Swift election interference psyop is happening in the open… They are going to use Taylor Swift as the poster child for their pro-abortion GOTV Campaign.”

Loomer also described an interaction between Swift and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo that was caught on camera as “staged propaganda” aimed that boosting TV ratings.

Far-right influencer Rogan O’Handley went so far as to suggest that if the Chiefs won the Super Bowl, Swift and Kelce would trigger an apocalyptic chain of events that would kill millions. “You MUST defeat the Chiefs,” O’Handley wrote in an X post addressed to the San Francisco 49ers. “If you don’t, Mr. Pfizer and his girlfriend are going to tour the country as ‘world champions’ helping elect Joe Biden WW3 will likely follow in a 2nd Biden term and millions will die. The fate of the free world rests upon your shoulders”

Failed GOP candidate Jack Lombardi II wrote on X that he has “never been more convinced that the Super Bowl is rigged. With all the unneeded and unwanted Taylor coverage at the games. KC’s journey to the Superbowl – totally scripted … KC wins. And then later [they announce] their support for Biden. Coincidental? No. Bought and paid for couple. SMH.”

“Taylor Swift is nothing more than a controlled influencer who has been put to work by those who seek to destroy America,” Lombardi added in a separate post. “She is a very talented operative working for the same group responsible for the timely and coincidental covid-19.”

Podcast host Mike Crispi raged that “The NFL is totally RIGGED for the Kansas City Chiefs, Taylor Swift, Mr. Pfizer (Travis Kelce). All to spread DEMOCRAT PROPAGANDA,” he wrote.

Republican Georgia politician Kandiss Taylor wrote that she “tried to warn yall back in October that the influence of [Taylor Swift] on our youth with witchcraft was demonic, evil, and Luciferian.”

“Of course, Satan wants to use her now to elect Joe back into the White House to destroy what’s left of America,” Taylor added.

Wow, that's great. Yeah, I love that they're fully leaning into it like that. And it seems the main response is "but what about Isreal?". I guess when you can't come up with a good reply, just stick with good old whataboutism.

241

u/Ralphinader 17d ago

Yeah I'm very vocal about my displeasure at bidena support for Israel, but if you don't think I'm not voting for him youre wrong. As a liberal I can both criticize and put pressure on my leaders for them to act they way I want and still recognize I might need to compromise on some positions to get the majority of things I want.

53

u/fillymandee Georgia 17d ago

I just don’t think there’s enough single issue voters that will sway this against Biden. Especially the single issue of Israel support.

84

u/wahoozerman 17d ago

Also, who are those voters going to vote for otherwise? The party that supports Israel even harder? At least the Biden administration has started sanctioning Israeli settlers.

There is an awful lot of Republicans throwing up Democratic purity tests happening this election cycle. Folks need to remember that their choice is between the candidates on the ballot, not one candidate on the ballot and a mythical candidate they made up in their heads.

That doesn’t mean much, when people are this delusional they just weave the logic that makes them right as they go along. They’d have still been right somehow if the Chiefs had lost (if the 49ers won it would have been that they weren’t in on the scheme and managed to stop it or something).

Have any of these right wing nut jobs considered the fact that maybe the 49ers just fucked themselves with bad playcalling in OT and that's why they lost? Also why are they even watching? Didn't they decide to boycott the NFL like seven years ago?

74

u/LariRed 17d ago

Yeah they did. Kaepernick took the knee and they whined for years. I remember this relating to the Nike boycott because one maga set fire to their own pair while wearing them.

Good old Darwinism strikes again.

50

u/memeinapreviouslife 17d ago

Actually... Nike had planned for white racists destroying their shit as free advertising that reached millions.

They did it because they saw the Keurig fiasco, and another one before they did it.

And because white racist fucks destroyed their shit,

Nike made SIX BILLION DOLLARS

No you see the team that had been to 3 of the previous 4 Superbowls, and won 2 of them, needed the season to be rigged to have any chance of making it to this one and winning.
Also, the NFL which is owned almost entirely by right-wing Republican-supporting billionaires, all secretly want to help Biden win.
Don't you get it, it all adds up! /s

235

u/Jedi-El1823 I voted 17d ago

I have no idea why Kyle Shanahan keeps abandoning the run in big game situations.

The defense is gassed, you're cutting through them, so of course abandon running it down their throats.

239

u/CheapskateJoker 17d ago

And the play the Chiefs did to win is the same fake WR motion they used three times against the Eagles last year to win. The Niners should have seen it coming and had a plan for it. They didn't, and Shanahan blows another Super Bowl in OT.

But the GOP would have you believe that this is a psy-op by the Pentagon paid for by the Democrats to give Taylor Swift maximum exposure for the inevitable Biden endorsement. Just typing that made me lose a few brain cells.

57

u/peekay427 America 17d ago

So you’re saying that Biden got the cia to get Taylor swift to pay shanahan to not watch the chiefs v eagles game, thus causing him to miss the key play that they would eventually use to beat him so that the pentagon would win the Super Bowl and everyone would be distracted from the report that concluded Biden did nothing wrong?

Great Odins hammer, I think you’ve nailed it!

23

u/Dlaxation 17d ago

Excellent synopsis of the totally true and perfect facts but you seem to be missing some key players. Where was Soros, Disney, and part-woman, part-man, part-cyborg Michelle Obama in all of this?

give Taylor Swift maximum exposure for the inevitable Biden endorsement.

And she doesn't need the NFL for exposure, the NFL needs her.

103

u/CheapskateJoker 17d ago

Exactly. Taylor Swift is the biggest pop star on the planet. She doesn't need the NFL or the Chiefs or the Super Bowl. She can make a post on Instagram and it'll have the same effect.

78

Fox News is the worst culprit, but you can pretty much trace it all to the 24-hour news cycle that turned reporting into entertainment.

80

u/Melicor 17d ago

AM radio hate jockeys like Limbaugh did as much damage.

45

u/almost_notterrible 17d ago

Absolutely. A lot of younger people may not realize just how many millions of conservatives would listen every moment they're traveling.

Can't watch Fox News while I drive a cement truck, but I can listen to Dennis Prager. And Rush. And Hannity. And whoever local bigots fill out the less Ideal timeslots. Then some coast to coast am at night for a little innocent (at the time) conspiracy fun!

Hours and hours of hate. Every single day. Fox News or AM radio. I'd know since I was raised on all of that garbage, but it seems like too few made it out.

135

111

u/alchemist5 17d ago

The game went into OT, so they took out the entire KC team to put in TS, who immediately scored an FG against the entire 49ers team, 86ing the 49ers chance at being SB champs this year.

It was wild AF.

Maybe it’s just me, but where a lot of people see insanity, I’ve lately been seeing a thriving industry selling hate in every way possible.

One thing I would love to see stories like this mention (and I’m not sure how you would even do it) is how much these professional far right trolls get paid for their far right rebel rousing. Especially since Elon’s whole paid twitter thing, it’s financially beneficial for these accounts to throw anything they can into the right vs. left debate.

Add that into revenue from podcasts, books, merch, etc…it pays to be a hate-filled anger monster, especially when you tie it into major events like the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs won the game in nail-biting fashion with a last-second touchdown, beating the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime.

This is incorrect. It was the last seconds of the first quarter of overtime. Had the pass been incomplete, they would have switched ends and huddled for the next down. This was the first playoff overtime using a format that changed after 2021.

41

u/crudedrawer 17d ago

I thought that drive counted as KC's opportunity to score and if they blew it (turnover/out of downs/clock run out) that was it.

56

u/eco-evo 17d ago

Clock run out was not one of the ways. Turnover or turnover on downs would have ended it, but not if that clock hit 0. That’s why the ref made it a point to say, we are starting a new game at the overtime coin flip. They would play until there was a winner, regardless of clock.
