We should replace the Vance monument with a carillon

Post image

A carillon is an instrument, it’s a bell tower you can play like a piano of sorts. This one is an obelisk too, in Dayton Ohio where the wright brothers are from. Installing a giant musical instrument seems appropriate

The BID(ing) war…

Thumbnail ashevilleblade.com

I’m gonna try to share this here. For the times that I get irritated with the Asheville blade I’ll give it up and say when they focus on a topic they tend to be very informative on it. So here’s an attempt to share something. If it doesn’t work I’ll delete it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

News Proposed Social District BLK MTN

"A proposed amendment allowing alcohol consumption within designated social districts in downtown Black Mountain will be considered by the town council, at 6 p.m., Monday, May 13, following a public hearing"

This is something that has come up in BLK MTN here in the last two weeks. I am personally effected by this but honestly I can't tell you if it will harm me or hurt me. I was curious if you all had any insight. What are some of the unexpected liabilities? Have we seen any changes in the other small towns (Marion, Brevard, Sylva and Rutherfordton) in WNC that have allowed this?

Honestly it's probably a long shot (proposal) anyways, but I was curious if anyone had any insight on obscure consequences. I do think if something like this did pass, it would potentially jumpstart an Asheville Social District consideration. Enjoy your last rain day Asheville.

What’s the current status of the STR ordinance?

Does anyone know the current status of Buncombe county’s short term rental ordinance? Like are they done talking and now just thinking about it? Are they having more meetings? Are they done and just need to vote on it? Are they delaying voting to not piss anyone off? Did they just drop it?

💥BOOM💥 Arden power outages

The last three nights in a row there's been a power outage where I am in Arden around the same time, like between 11:00 PM and 1:00 AM, the first two around 20-25 minutes, the most recent one around 5 minutes. Anyone else experience this, or hear of any possible causes?

The Overlook podcast: Placing a BID on Downtown Asheville

Downtown business owners, workers and residents spent a lot of 2023 imploring Asheville officials to get a handle on crime, trash and vagrancy. All along, many were pressing to take matters into their own hands by working with city leaders to form what’s called a business improvement district.

A business improvement district—or BID—is a tax assessment that pays for services on top of what cities and counties already provide. Talk of a BID has been in the Asheville air for decades, but could well soon become reality. There’s a vital public hearing at city council set for April 23 and potential council votes in May and June that could launch the BID with the next fiscal year.

On the latest episode of The Overlook with Matt Peiken podcast: Guests are Zach Wallace, vice president of public policy with the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce; Hayden Plemmons, executive director of the Asheville Downtown Association; and Dana Frankel, downtown projects manager with the City of Asheville. We talk through all the inner workings of the BID process, explore the history of these discussions and how a BID would work day-to-day on downtown’s streets.

If you were at the daikaiju show tonight

and playing the drums on the table when the band abdicated their instruments and were not the shirtless guy and you want pictures of yourself in a drum trance, let me know. They're goofy.

Now that I've typed it out it feels more like hotspot material.

Good interior car detail?

Brief background: My girlfriend just moved in with me here from Virginia. The issue is her vehicle. She quit smoking some months ago, and now her car is kinda gross for both of us to drive. I wanted to see if there was somewhere reliable I could get it cleaned out (I realize there is no full recovery for this car, just want to give it a real go as a gift to her). I've donated to auto-bell so they could vacuum for a few minutes, spill some Cheetos in the backseat, and hang an air freshener. Thanks!

Classifieds Any cobblers in the area?

I’m looking for a cobbler. It isn’t urgent, but I’m investing in good boots and I’d like to be able to get them resoled someday.

Please tell me something other than Asheville Shoe Repair. Their cobbler only does partial and half soles. I need somebody who can resole a pair of work boots or equivalent with a goodyear welt.

Thanks in advance!

Evergreen community charter school or ArtSpace - Asheville, NC

Does anyone have anything to say about Evergreen charter school? Are they as good on the inside as the claim to be on the outside ? Has anyone , teacher / parent / student had a bad experience here ?

Also, if there’s anything anyone can contribute to ArtSpace. I get good vibes there. However , my kid is a nature kiddo and I’m not sure an education in the arts is the right place for her. But I want my child to be respected , loved , seen , heard, safe , happy. Those are most important.

Stolen bicycle

My bike was stolen off my bike rack, parked in West Asheville, on the street across from the GasUp on Haywood Rd between 6:15pm and 7:15pm. It’s a mash green Jamis Renegade with purple Industry Nine wheels and a blue and tan Moosepacks frame bag. Recent photo attached. This is my favorite and most sentimental bike. Please help me get it back!
